Why an Electric Heat Pump Is Better for Your House - and Your Energy Bill

If you're looking for the single biggest energy cost hiding in your home, don't look at the air conditioner or the TV. Look at your hot water system.


Heating water accounts for roughly a quarter of the average Australian household's energy use — second only to heating and cooling the home itself. If your hot water still comes from an old electric storage tank or a gas unit, you're paying far more for every shower, load of washing and sink of dishes than you need to.

A hot water heat pump changes that equation. Here's how.


Heat pumps don't make heat — they move it

A conventional electric hot water system works like a giant kettle: it pushes electricity through a resistive element to generate heat. Every kilowatt-hour of electricity in gives you one kilowatt-hour of heat out. That's the physics ceiling, and you pay for all of it.

A heat pump works completely differently. It extracts heat that already exists in the outside air and transfers it into your water tank — the same refrigeration cycle your fridge uses, run in reverse. Because the heat is moved rather than generated, a modern heat pump delivers several times more heat energy than the electricity it consumes.

The technical measure of this efficiency is called the Coefficient of Performance, or COP. SOLVUE hot water heat pumps run on R290 — propane, a natural refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) of just 3, compared with 675 for the R32 used in most competing systems and 2,088 for older R410A systems. That's an extraordinary environmental advantage, but R290 also has a direct impact on running costs: it transfers heat exceptionally well, and because SOLVUE systems require a smaller refrigerant charge, the compressor works more efficiently to deliver the same output.

Legionella protection — The SOLVUE unit includes an automatic Anti-Legionella function that periodically heats the tank to 60°C, a temperature at which Legionella bacteria cannot survive. Built to last, engineered with care
